Posted by Laughing Lion Herbs on 2nd Dec 2021
If you haven’t tried Kratom tinctures, they’re a highly concentrated, versatile, portable option that addresses some of the disadvantages of Kratom powder. Keep reading to learn more about Kratom tinctures and how you can make your own at home.
What is A Kratom Tincture?
Tinctures are more concentrated versions of the original substance, and are created through an extraction process aided by an alcohol-based solvent. Through this chemical process alkaloids are stripped from the organic plant matter. Tinctures are highly potent and effective.
Types of Kratom Tinctures
There are two main types of Kratom Tinctures. The first is a full-spectrum tincture. This means that all of the alkaloids stripped from the plant matter are left intact. The other type is an isolated tincture, which yields a solution featuring targeted alkaloids.
Why should you make your own Kratom Tinctures?
Due to increased restrictions on Kratom, tinctures are more difficult to obtain commercially. Not to fear! Making a Kratom Tincture at home can be a great option.
How do you make a Kratom Tincture?
To start, there are two ways to begin making a Kratom Tincture. You can choose to start from the plant leaf or from a powder.
Equipment
Before you begin, you will need to make sure you have the following:
- A measuring scale
- A sealable glass jar
- Small glass tincture bottles
- Funnel
- Strainer or cheesecloth
Ingredients
- Either
- 4 - 5 ounces of powdered kratom
- Mitragyna Speciosa’s leaves
- One Liter of either Ethyl Alcohol or Everclear
- The ratio is typically one liter of alcohol per 4 ounces of powder
- A set of pH strips
- Citric acid
- Vinegar
Process
Tinctures Made from Mitragyna Speciosa Leaves
- Mix the Kratom leaves, water, and Everclear
- Transfer mixture to a jar that can be fitted with a tightly sealed lid
- To preserve the mixture and aid in the extraction of the alkaloids, add the citric acid.
- Alcohol will preserve it as well
- We suggest adding 5-15 grams of citric acid minimum
- Using a pH scale, monitor the pH level of the mixture
- Once the pH drops to 3.5, seal the jar and shake it for a few minutes
- We suggest waiting for the pH to drop to 2.5
- Immediately after shaking the jar, place it in a dark, cool area and let it rest for 7 to 14 days
- Note: you should avoid direct sunlight and should not handle the jar.
- Note: The longer the solution sits, the more potent the tincture. Allowing a full 14 days to rest is recommended for the highest potency.
- Note: You can add vinegar to the solution prior to steeping
- After 7 - 14 days you will want to begin to evaporate your mixture.
- For increased potency, allow almost half of your mixture to evaporate by gently heating the solution with the (leaves or powder still inside) until it steams - Then allow to evaporate
- Keep the temperature below 190 degrees
- Using the cloth, strain the leaves from the saturated liquid
- Discard the leaves
- Keep your liquid in the same jar and allow half of the liquid to evaporate
- The remaining substance will be a thick, potent tincture extract, ready for use!
Tinctures Made From Powdered Kratom
- Precisely measure 4 ounces of Kratom powder and one liter of ethyl alcohol or Everclear
- The typical ratio is for every four ounces of powder, one-liter alcohol should be used. Note your dosage and adjust your ratio accordingly.
- Combine the powder and alcohol in the sealable jar.
- Mix well
- To preserve the mixture and aid in the extraction of the alkaloids, add the citric acid.
- Use a pH scale to observe the acidity of the mixture. Keep on repeating the same procedure until you get a 3.5 or even lower value on the pH scale.
- We suggest waiting for the pH to drop to 2.5
- Seal the jar
- Shake well
- Place the jar in a dark and cool place and let it rest for 7 to 14 days
- Note: Avoid handling the jar
- Note: Allowing a full 14 days to rest is recommended for the highest potency.
- You use a cheesecloth or other straining material to strain the solution, by placing the cheesecloth over top of one jar and transferring the solution to another jar through the cloth.
- Note: Before you open the glass jar, shake it well.
- Note: Immediately remove excess kratom powder
- With the assistance of a funnel, put the mixture back into your mason jar
- Typically, it’s advised to let the mixture evaporate until you yield one tincture bottle of liquid per ounce of powder, so if you began with 4 ounces of powder, you should aim for four bottles worth of kratom tincture.
- Note: It is advisable to label the date the tincture was made.
- Note: It can also be beneficial to note the type or strain if making multiple, and dosage amounts.
