Kava overuse: skin, eye & hydration warnings
Prolonged or heavy kava use may cause kava dermopathy: dry, scaly or flaky skin. Rashes and irritated, red or watery eyes have also been reported. Stop using kava and seek medical advice if you develop these symptoms. Do not ignore persistent or worsening symptoms or try to manage them simply by drinking more water while continuing kava use.
Dry skin or eye irritation alone does not establish that you are dehydrated. Separately, dehydration can become serious and may require hospital treatment. Seek urgent medical care if you have very little or no urination, marked dizziness, or cannot keep fluids down. Call 911 for confusion, fainting or loss of consciousness. Seek prompt care for eye pain, vision changes, or a severe rash; call 911 for trouble breathing or swelling of the face, lips or tongue.
Follow the current package directions and warnings. Read NIH information on kava and MedlinePlus information on dehydration.
