Product Guide - Red Vein Kratom
Posted by Laughing Lion Herbs on 1st Mar 2020
When you’re new to kratom, you’ll quickly get used to seeing it categorized by color. We normally talk about kratom as belonging to one of the following groups:
- Red Vein Kratom
- Green Vein Kratom
- White Vein Kratom
- Gold Vein Kratom
Red kratom is one of the most desirable types on the market. Leaves with red veins and stems are known for having noticeably higher levels of 7-hydroxymitragynine. Mitragynine is still the most common alkaloid found in every type of kratom, but the higher concentration of 7-hydroxymitragynine is what makes so many people interested in red vein kratom compared to other types.
Understanding Alkaloids in Red Kratom
The main reason people become interested in any kind of kratom is because of the alkaloids present in this plant. The alkaloids in kratom interact with receptors in the human body in the same way as anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs like ibuprofen, oxycodone, fentanyl, tramadol, and anesthesia drugs. Since kratom is a natural product, many people are interested in addressing discomfort with it instead of pharmaceutical drugs.
Alkaloids are natural organic compounds that contain nitrogen and can be found in several different types of plants including mitragyna speciosa (the plant that produces kratom leaves). For a natural organic base to be considered an alkaloid by any scientific definition, it must produce a physiological effect on human beings or other animals. The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association has suggested that the alkaloids in kratom can interact with opioid receptors in the human body. This is one of the biggest reasons that kratom has become so popular in the United States and throughout the world.
The two main alkaloids in kratom are mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. Pharmacological researchers for the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association have found that mitragynine acts on the mu, delta, and kappa opioid receptors. For many years, people thought that mitragynine was the only active ingredient in kratom for exactly that reason. In more recent years, we’ve started to learn that 7-hydroxymitragynine may be even more important.
Types of Red Kratom
All types of red vein kratom are sought after because of their high levels of alkaloids. Even within the category of red vein kratom, though, there are several different strains. Unlike some other herbs, the differences between different strains of kratom are fairly minimal. 95% of all kratom in the United States comes from the South Kalimantarian region of Borneo, which is why they’re all so similar.
Even though the differences are small, there are still some slight nuances between the different strains. Some of our customers like to sample several different types of red kratom for that reason. Most of the differences occur simply because the different strains may leaf material from various harvests that happen in different locations. Some people like to try a different strain once they’ve been buying the same one for long enough to get used to it. Since a new strain offers something ever so slightly different, it can improve your kratom experience just by being a little bit different from what you’re used to.
Here at Laughing Lion Herbs, we have five favorite types of red kratom.
1 – Premium Red Maeng Da Kratom
Red Maeng Da is perhaps the most popular strain in the world. It’s relatively easy to see why, too, because it’s so high in alkaloids as a variety of red kratom. Those who are sensitive enough to notice the slight differences between different types of kratom often say this strain is slightly more invigorating than usual. Again, though, you can expect your experience of Red Maeng Da to be almost identical to what you’d get with any other type of red vein kratom.
2 – Premium Red Bali Kratom
Red Bali kratom is the most likely strain to compete with Red Maeng Da for the title of “most popular type of kratom in the world.” When kratom harvesters choose plants for Red Bali harvests, they normally look for hardy plants with large leaves. Red Bali kratom comes from Borneo, like most of the kratom in the United States, but may have received its name because it was traditionally traded through a port in Bali. If you’re looking for a good place to start with red vein kratom, this strain may appeal to you.
3 – Premium Red Thai Kratom
While Red Thai Kratom isn’t quite as well known as Red Bali and Red Maeng Da, it is one of the most popular strains that originated in Thailand. When Thailand banned kratom in 1943, those who care for this plant brought some seeds to Indonesia to preserve what they considered to be the best strains of kratom. Thailand did think better of the ban and lifted it in 2018, which may open the door for Red Thai kratom to return to its place of origin. For now, we continue to have success importing Red Thai Kratom from the South Kalimantarian region in Borneo.
4 – Premium Red Bentuangie Kratom
Red Bentuangie kratom, often referred to as Red Bent for short, is the result of careful growing and processing. After it’s harvested, this particular strain is often dried in the sun, which helps the leaves dry while becoming lightly toasted. This process helps oxidize the leaves a little bit, which gives Red Bentuangie kratom a beautiful reddish-brown appearance.
5 – Premium Red Hulu Kratom
As a strain, Red Hulu kratom isn’t as popular as some of the other options on this list yet. It traditionally comes from natural forests on Hulu Island in Borneo, and it’s definitely underrated when you consider the high alkaloid levels in red kratom. As a true strain, it’s named for the actual native location of the harvest. That means that, as long as you buy from a reputable kratom company, you know exactly where your kratom powder is coming from.
